AUDEMARS PIGUET CELEBRATED THE UNVEILING OF SUN XUN’S LARGE-SCALE IMMERSIVE INSTALLATION FOR ITS 2ND ART COMMISSION AT ART BASEL IN MIAMI
Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet unveiled Reconstruction of the Universe, a major new immersive artwork by Chinese artist Sun Xun for the second Audemars Piguet Art Commission, at Art Basel in Miami. Sun Xun’s large-scale installation was unveiled on Tuesday 29 November 2016 on the Miami Beach oceanfront, spanning a city block between 21st and 22nd Streets. Audemars Piguet celebrated the unveiling with a cocktail party attended by 1,100 guests including brand ambassador Serena Williams and actress Katie Holmes who were entertained by renowned French DJ Martin Solveig. Olivier Audemars, Vice Chairman of the Board of Audemars Piguet, welcomed guests to the event saying: “The Audemars Piguet Art Commission supports artists in the creation of works of exceptional complexity and craftsmanship, and we’re delighted to celebrate the unveiling of Sun Xun’s installation tonight. The immensity of this project was clear from the start, but the more you look at it and talk to the artist, the more you want to look at it again: every time you see something different which makes the whole experience unique.”
Artist Sun Xun said: “It has been very interesting to work on the Audemars Piguet Art Commission, one of my most complex projects to date. I have drawn upon years of experience and worked with a team of over 100 art students to realize this artwork, and I am pleased to see that what I imagined on paper here exactly one year ago has now taken shape.” Sun Xun’s Reconstruction of the Universe is a completely immersive work of art, which incorporates traditional craft and cutting-edge technology, but also explores global systems and individual memory. Audiences will be invited to enter the installation, presented in a large bamboo structure, after dusk to experience the full impact of the illuminated work.
In 2015, Sun Xun was invited to Audemars Piguet’s home in Le Brassus, to learn about the brand’s 141-year tradition of precision and expert craftsmanship. Considered one of China’s most talented young artists, Sun Xun was selected for his mastery of many interdisciplinary fields and highly experimental working methods, mirroring the forward thinking and technical excellence inherent to Audemars Piguet's watchmaking. The development and presentation of the installation was undertaken in collaboration with the artist’s three galleries: Sean Kelly Gallery in New York, ShanghART Gallery in Shanghai and Singapore and Edouard Malingue Gallery in Hong Kong. Sennheiser and Martin Solveig had the pleasure to create the sound experience which made the party rock, while historic family-run champagne Pommery provided a selection of its finest champagnes including Pommery Brut Royal. A traditional yet innovative company founded in 1836 by Madame Pommery, the iconic champagne house has a longstanding tradition in supporting the art community and with Audemars Piguet, Pommery has found an ideal partner to grow this commitment.
